There’s something I’ve been noticing when I play music.
I actually DJ better when the story comes first.
Instead of playing a song and then trying to figure out what to say about it, I start with a story, an idea, a memory, or a connection—and then I let the music take us where the story wants to go.
And tonight, I want to try something a little different with you.
🎧 The DNA of Soul Music: A Black Music Timeline
Have you ever heard a Hip-Hop record you’ve known for 20 years…and then one day heard the original song it sampled?
Suddenly you hear BOTH records differently.
That’s what tonight is about.
We’re going on a journey:
SOUL → FUNK → DISCO → HIP-HOP → NEO SOUL → R&B
Because these genres didn’t simply replace one another.
They talked to each other.
A bassline from the 1970s shows up twenty years later underneath Biggie.
A funk groove gets chopped, rearranged, and suddenly becomes the foundation of a Dr. Dre record.
A soul record our parents played becomes the sample underneath the Hip-Hop record their children loved.
And sometimes we’ve been singing the newer song for 30 years without realizing where it came from.
🔥 Tonight, We’re Going to Connect the Dots
I’ll play some of the originals.
Then we’ll hear what happened when another generation discovered them.
And sometimes I’ll play the original and ask:
“Alright…who sampled this?”
That’s where YOU come in.
Drop your guesses in the chat before I reveal the record.
Some will be obvious. Others might completely surprise you.
But this isn’t a music-history lecture.
It’s a listening party.
I want you to put on some good headphones if you have them. Turn the volume up just enough. Get comfortable. Pour whatever makes you comfortable—water, tea, wine, whatever your Thursday evening calls for. 😎
Then just listen.
Listen to the bass. Listen to the drums. Listen to the samples. Listen to the lyrics.
And listen for the musical conversations happening across generations.
🎶 Because Black Music Has a Family Tree
Soul gave something to Funk.
Funk gave something to Disco.
Disco helped shape Hip-Hop.
Hip-Hop reached backward and sampled all of them.
Neo Soul reached back again.
And today’s R&B continues borrowing, remixing, remembering, and reinventing.
Tonight we’re going to hear that family tree for ourselves.
And somewhere along the way, I suspect you’re going to hear a record and say:
“WAIT…THAT’S WHERE THAT CAME FROM?!” 😂
That’s exactly the moment I’m looking for.
