There’s a question that doesn’t get asked enough in conversations about change:
Are you trying to change the castle — or build the cave?
One path works from inside broken systems. The other builds something new from the ground up. Both require courage. Both require strategy. And this Thursday, we’re bringing two men who’ve lived both paths to Soul Thursdays.
Meet This Week’s Guests
Dr. Erroll Southers — Changing Systems From Within
Dr. Erroll Southers has spent decades at the intersection of public safety, policy, and community. A former FBI Special Agent, counterterrorism expert, and USC professor, he has worked inside some of the most powerful institutions in America — and used that access to push for change that actually reaches people.
His work asks a hard question: What do you do when you’re inside a system that wasn’t built for your community? Do you leave? Do you fight? Do you transform it from within?
Dr. Southers has chosen the harder path — staying in the room, earning the access, and using it.
Perrin Anderson — Building the Cave
Perrin Anderson represents a different kind of leadership — one rooted in community, mentorship, and building structures that don’t yet exist. Where systems have failed, he builds. Where institutions have excluded, he creates space.
His story is about what happens when you stop waiting for the castle to let you in and start laying the foundation for something your people can actually call home.
Why This Conversation Matters Right Now
We are living in a moment where both strategies are needed — and both are under attack.
The people working inside systems are being pushed out. The people building alternatives are being defunded, dismissed, or co-opted. And the communities caught in the middle are watching and waiting to see which path actually works.
This Thursday, we’re not going to pretend there’s one right answer. We’re going to sit with the tension — and learn from two men who’ve earned the right to speak on it.
You can’t change a system you don’t understand. And you can’t build something new if you’re always reacting to the old one.
What We’ll Explore
What does it actually take to change a system from within — without losing yourself?
When is it time to stop reforming and start building something new?
How do access and activism work together — and when do they conflict?
What does real community leadership look like in 2026?
Who helped build you — and who are you building today?
